Finding a safe, effective, and affordable vaccine to prevent the spread of HIV is our best long-term hope for controlling the AIDS epidemic. HIV vaccine research is essential in the fight against AIDS along with prevention, treatment, and care. But there is still a lot of public misunderstanding about HIV vaccine research, and the success of HIV vaccine trials depends on the understanding, trust, support, and participation of individuals and organizations at all levels.
Funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and implemented by the Academy for Educational Development (AED) and Get Your Message Right (GYMR), the NIAID HIV Vaccine Research Education Initiative (NHVREI) was established to create an environment in which HIV affected communities and individuals are more aware, educated, and supportive of HIV vaccine research and have more positive attitudes towards participation in HIV vaccine clinical trials.
National and community-based organizations across the nation are already working to build awareness and support for HIV vaccine research among the populations most affected by HIV/AIDS, including African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, and gay and bisexual men, with appropriate focus on women and youth. Twenty-one (21) organizations were selected through a competitive request for proposals (RFP) process to become a part of the NHVREI National and Local Partnership Programs. These partner organizations receive grants and dedicate significant staff resources to conduct a variety of outreach activities in their communities and among their constituent networks to build awareness and support for HIV vaccine research. Some examples of Partner activities include promoting HIV Vaccine Awareness Day; providing HIV vaccine updates for their staff, volunteers and board members; and, hosting community forums and sessions on HIV vaccine research at national conferences.
Organizations that are committed to ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States are invited to apply to become a part of the NHVREI Network. The Network is a coalition of organizations working to support HIV vaccine research among populations most impacted by HIV through community education and information dissemination.
